CDPAP, short for Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program, is available in New York that empowers older individuals and those with disabilities to have control over their caregiving. This initiative allows qualified Medicaid recipients to select and supervise their caregivers, including family or friends, who have received proper training for assisting with daily tasks.

The program puts recipients in charge of their care, allowing personalized support that respects their independence and dignity. Unlike traditional agency-based home care, CDPAP offers recipients flexibility, autonomy, and a safe environment.

To become a CDPAP caregiver in New York, follow these steps:

  • Confirm that the person in need of care is eligible for Medicaid and interested in CDPAP.
  • Enroll in the CDPAP program through either Medicaid or an MLTC plan.
  • The person needing care will undergo an assessment to determine their specific care requirements.
  • If selected, you can become a caregiver, typically a family member or friend.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork, which includes undergoing background checks.
  • Once approved, begin providing care following the care plan.
  • Stay in contact with the program and continue to provide ongoing care as needed.

Please be aware that the steps involved in the process may differ slightly based on the particular Managed Long-Term Care plan or Medicaid office. It is essential to directly communicate with the relevant authorities and adhere to their guidelines to ensure a smooth process of becoming a CDPAP caregiver or provider.

To be eligible to apply as a CDPAP caregiver, the following requirements apply:

  1. You must be 18 years of age or older.

  2. You must be legally authorized to work in the United States (I-9 documentation).

  3. You should have a family member or friend you intend to care for.
